Arguments against Capital Punishment
Over the years, many countries have abolished capital punishment. These following countries have used death penalty as a punishment before, but have abolished it:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, Macau, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Venezuela
Point 1: Value of Human Life
Human life is valuable as you only live once. It is not up to our choice to take away someones life as severe as the crime they offended were. We use capital punishment to take away the murderer's life as they did to the innocent person. Some people believe that capital punishment is doing the same thing as what the murderer did.
Point 2: Execution of the innocent
Witnesses, prosecutors and jurors can all make mistakes. Sooner or later, innocent people may be killed because of these flaws. But when capital punishment is used. these mistakes cannot be put right.
According to Amnesty International In the USA, 130 people sentenced to death have been found innocent since 1973 and realised from death row.
Point 3- Failure to Deter
Capital punishment does not seem to deter people from committing severe crimes as crime rates such as murder rate does not seem to be lower with capital punishment. Instead, it could lead to an increase in murder rate. (read page: countries)
The thing that deter is more like the probability of being caught and punished.
Point 4- Other Methods
There are other methods we could use as punishment than taking away someone's life. One of the most severe punishment in Hong Kong is life imprisonment. Also, there is a chance that someone may change. They may learn from their mistakes during the time in jail and become a better person. Everyone deserves a second chance, although the mistakes are severe, we should not take their lives away.
