Capital Punishment is an important issue as it is still in use as a punishment in many countries. But is this actually an effective way to reduce crime rates? Although capital punishment may seem to be a right way to punish the people who offended violent crimes, does this stop people from offending crimes?
According to Amnesty International, 140 countries have already abolished Capital Punishment.
From the page Countries and Crime Rates, we looked into capital punishment in China, United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
In United States, the states without capital punishment seem to have a lower crime rate than the states with capital punishment. As well as that, after the abolishment of capital punishment for Australia, homicides rates have been reducing. Is capital punishment really effective?
However, In UK there was an increase in crime rates after the abolishment of capital punishment. This suggests that without capital punishment, people may be less scared to commit crimes knowing that they would not be tortured and executed for their crimes they committed.
In China, even with capital punishment, crime rates have been increasing. China is a communist country, and has a government system that runs differently from the government systems in USA and the UK. Unlike many countries, China has not abolished the death penalty. China, however, has issued security measures - although this seems to have done little to stop the increase of criminal prosecutions per year. This may suggest that capital punishment may not be very effective in reducing crime rate as well.
